Save the Crayons - Lawmakers

The Crayon Collection, a non-profit organization formed in 2013, gathers gently used crayons from restaurants and donates them to Title 1 schools and Head Start Centers, providing kids with the resources to expand their learning and creativity and helping prevent millions of crayons from ending up in landfills every year. Why?

  • Over 150 million still-good crayons are thrown away each year by restaurants in the United States.

  • Crayons are made of paraffin wax and never decompose so they end up in landfills.

  • Art education has been defunded in public schools across the country.

  • Teachers are spending on average $900 of their own money to outfit their classrooms with materials.

In honor of our 10th anniversary it is time to eliminate this habit of waste and get legislation passed that makes it illegal to throw away gently used crayons and instead supports a system for reuse by donating to vulnerable populations who otherwise do not have access.

By offering art education in the school system, all children get a chance to stimulate their imaginations, as well as their cognitive and problem-solving skills. These problem-solving skills enable them to think creatively in other situations, which can boost their academic results. Further, the process of repurposing gently used crayons can be used as a relatable tool for teaching young children the benefits of recycling, reusing, and reducing waste as well as having a rich philanthropic experience.
